From Ancient Seas to Stone Giants

Monsanto, Idanha-a-Velha & Penha Garcia — A Journey Through Time

In Monsanto, enormous granite boulders shape the village itself, with centuries-old houses built beneath, between and around the rocks. Its dramatic landscape even became a filming location for Dragonstone in HBO’s House of the Dragon, bringing the world of Westeros to life among Portugal’s ancient stones.

In Idanha-a-Velha, time moves differently. Behind the remains of its ancient Roman walls lie the traces of a once-prosperous town — Roman inscriptions, a Visigothic cathedral and baptistery, and quiet stone streets that hold the memory of Roman, Visigothic and medieval Portugal.

Then, in Penha Garcia, history stretches far beyond human memory. Along the quartzite cliffs overlooking the Ponsul Valley, fossilised traces preserve the movements of marine creatures from an ocean that covered this region almost 480 million years ago. Above the valley, a Templar castle watches over traditional watermills and a landscape shaped by both nature and generations of local life.

A private journey through Beira Baixa, where ancient civilisations, extraordinary landscapes and living traditions meet.
